Meisner Intensive 最終回

駆け足でMeisner techniqueを見てきたこの講座も最終回。 今回はせりふの扱いと、これまでのテクニックをどうやってシーンの中で使うか。

  • Work on lines
    • "Pure" Meisner way: Take out all stage directions, then learn lines with nothing on it. Do not put emotions on it. Do not "plan ahead". Just memorize by words. Then, on stage, put whatever reactions you get on the lines.
    • Modified technique:
      • You may use stage directions as hints of what's going on. Don't be bound by them; but you can think why the writer put them there.
      • How to learn lines: First, read through it purely for the information, just to know what is happening in the scene. Second, highlight 1-3 words in the other character's line that triggers your line. The trigger may be in the stage direction. The trigger may not be in the last line. If you can narrow down to less words, it's better. This technique makes learning lines so much easier. The highlighted words trigger your reaction, and reaction shots are far more important than speaking shots. It also make your lines spontaneous, natural.

続いて講師がKramer vs Kramer の1シーンを口述するのを書き取って、 ペア組んで20分-30分くらい練習時間が与えられ、 舞台でシーンを演じることに。

"It is often the case that you get a revised script just 20 minutes before shooting. You can't rehearse (you've already rehearsed with original script), you can't take time to remember them thoroughly. But if you grab the trigger words, you can react naturally even the details of the words are not nailed. And that's ok, since in shooting you'll perform the scene again and again. First it's a master shot, so even if you mess up words it doesn't matter much. AD will correct your lines. By the time it gets to closeups, you'll pretty much know the words."

とはいえ、英語のせりふにアプローチしはじめる時はまだ一段indirectionが ある感じだなあ。自分でimproviseできる表現の幅が広くないので、 「そのせりふのように喋る」ためには「なんとなく」以上にそのせりふを 覚えてないときつい。

まあそれでもシーンは出来た。パートナーが上手かったせいもあるけど、 repetition, independent activity, emotional preparationが 有機的に噛み合って、自然な反応が出てきた。 これを20回繰り返せるかというとそれはまた別の話だが。

"One of the reason Meisner is good tool for film is that you have to play the scene many times, from master shot to the closeups, and if you can react naturally and honestly for every time, you can only get better (Your acting won't be stale). But it is a tool that you have to train yourself to use."
